Research Labs and Branches

Research labs and branches include several research groups, each led by a principal investigator.

Scientists in NEI research labs

NEI scientists are part of the National Institutes of Health Intramural Research Program (IRP). With 1,200 Principal Investigators and more than 4,000 Postdoctoral Fellows conducting basic, translational, and clinical research, the IRP is the largest biomedical research institution in the world.

The Office of the Scientific Director supports basic, translational, and clinical research within the Division of Intramural Research that is carried out by fellows and students, staff scientists, and scientific support staff in various research disciplines. We are NEI Intramural.
