Vision and Aging: Social Media

NEHEP has developed social media resources to help you reach older adults about vision and aging. Remember, many caregivers of older adults use social media and can be reached through Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and more. We have materials you can use throughout the year and during Healthy Aging® Month.

Using social media year-round

Anytime is a good time to promote eye health on social media. Use and share our social media posts, infocards, infographics, and other materials located in our Resources section.

Follow us on the NEHEP Facebook and Twitter pages, share our age-related eye disease videos on YouTube, and get some great ideas on the Vision and Aging Pinterest board.

Facebook and Twitter posts

Post the following messages on Facebook and Twitter, or create your own messages. To make your Facebook messages more visually appealing, include images from our image library.

  1. #DidYouKnow that as you age, you are at higher risk of developing eye diseases and conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration (#AMD), #cataract, #DiabeticEyeDisease, and #glaucoma? Visit https://www.nei.nih.gov/agingeye to learn about your risk factors and what you can do to protect your sight.
  2. As people age, they may notice changes to their vision, such as needing glasses to see up close or needing more light to see well. However, vision loss is not a normal part of aging. Since many eye diseases have no early symptoms, you may have an eye problem and not know it. Find out by getting a dilated #EyeExam: https://nei.nih.gov/healthyeyes/eyeexam
  3. While vision loss is not a normal part of aging, older adults are at higher risk for some eye diseases and conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration (#AMD), #cataract, #DiabeticEyeDisease, and #glaucoma. These diseases have no early warning signs, so it’s important to visit your eye doctor for a dilated #EyeExam. Learn more with this infographic: https://nei.nih.gov/catalog/aging-eye-health-infographic
  4. It’s true! By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a #cataract or have had cataract surgery. To learn more, visit https://nei.nih.gov/health/cataract/cataract_facts
  5. Dry eye occurs when the eye does not produce tears properly or when the tears evaporate too quickly. It is more common among women and older adults, and can be treated with artificial tears, gels, gel inserts, and ointments. Talk with your eye doctor or visit https://nei.nih.gov/health/dryeye/dryeye to learn more.
  6. If you have diabetes or a family history of #glaucoma, are African American age 50+, or are Hispanic/Latino age 65 or older, you may be eligible for a dilated #EyeExam through Medicare. Learn more at https://nei.nih.gov/nehep/programs/visionandaging/medicare
  7. Many #aging Americans living on a fixed income find it difficult to pay for proper eye care and corrective eyewear. But, there are organizations that may be able to help. For information on financial assistance for eye care, visit https://nei.nih.gov/sites/default/files/health-pdfs/FinancialAssistance.pdf
  8. As you get older, you are at higher risk for age-related eye diseases and conditions that often have no early warning signs. The good news is that these diseases can be detected through a dilated #EyeExam. Give yourself peace of mind and schedule one today! https://nei.nih.gov/sites/default/files/nehep-pdfs/DilatedEyeExamParticipantHandout_tagged.pdf
  9. Do you feel as if you’re in the dark about eye health as you get older? NEHEP can help! Download this fact sheet to learn about age-related eye diseases and conditions and what you can do to protect your sight: https://nei.nih.gov/sites/default/files/nehep-pdfs/VandAToolkit_Mod2_Handout_508.pdf
  10. Planning a trip to your eye doctor? Print this handout and bring it with you for some questions you may want to ask during your visit: https://nei.nih.gov/sites/default/files/nehep-pdfs/VandAToolkit_Mod3_Handout_508.pdf
  11. Want to help older adults learn how they can protect their sight? The See Well for a Lifetime Toolkit is designed for anyone who works with older adults in community-based settings. Explore the toolkit at https://www.nei.nih.gov/nehep/programs/visionandaging/whatis
  12. If you work with older adults, NEHEP has resources for you. The See Well for a Lifetime Toolkit can help you convey science-based, easy-to-understand information about how people can protect their sight as they age. You can download it here: https://www.nei.nih.gov/nehep/programs/visionandaging/whatis
