    As part of the federal government’s National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Eye Institute’s mission is to “conduct and support research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to blinding eye diseases, visual disorders, mechanisms of visual function, preservation of sight, and the special health problems and requirements of the blind.”

NEHEP has developed resources to help you with social media outreach as part of your efforts to reach Hispanics/Latinos.

Using social media year-round

Anytime is a good time to promote eye health on social media. Use and share our social media posts, infocards, infographics, and other materials located in our Resources section.

Follow us on the NEHEP Facebook and Twitter pages, share our eye disease videos on YouTube, and get some great ideas on the Spanish Pinterest board.

  1. It’s an eye health fiesta! Celebrations year round can help you reach Hispanics/Latinos with eye health information. Check out our Celebrations list for ideas: https://nei.nih.gov/nehep/programs/ojo/outreach
  2. Did you know Hispanics/Latinos have some of the highest rates of visual impairment and blindness? Eye disease frequently goes undetected in Hispanics/Latinos. Find resources to help raise awareness about eye health at https://nei.nih.gov/nehep/programs/ojo
  3. Eye health education materials are available “en español” directly from the National Eye Health Education Program. Download yours today! https://nei.nih.gov/nehep/programs/ojo/resources
  4. The Diabetes and Healthy Eyes Toolkit helps community health workers educate people with diabetes and their loved ones about diabetic eye disease and maintaining healthy vision. Learn more and download the Toolkit in English or Spanish at https://nei.nih.gov/diabetestoolkit
  5. Although early detection and treatment can prevent vision loss from glaucoma, most cases of glaucoma in Hispanics/Latinos go undiagnosed. Learn more about glaucoma at https://nei.nih.gov/glaucoma
  6. Hispanics/Latinos with diabetes are at higher risk of losing vision or going blind from diabetic eye disease. But vision loss can be prevented when it is detected and treated early. Learn more at http://www.nei.nih.gov
  7. Studies show Hispanics/Latinos have high rates of eye disease and visual impairment, and many are unaware they have an eye disease. The National Eye Health Education Program has materials in Spanish to help you promote eye health. Download materials at https://nei.nih.gov/nehep/programs/ojo/resources
