All people with diabetes, both type 1 and type 2, can develop diabetic retinopathy, the most common diabetic eye disease. The longer you have diabetes, the more likely it is that you will develop diabetic retinopathy. In fact, more than one out of two people with type 1 diabetes have some retinopathy after 10 years of diabetes, and nearly one out of three people with type 2 diabetes have some retinopathy at the time they are diagnosed.
