Dr. Schron is responsible for the scientific evaluation, development, and management of Phase II and III clinical trials and epidemiologic studies. She serves on several NEI steering and executive committees, as well as Data Safety Monitoring Boards for clinical studies, including:

Professional Highlights

Prior to joining the NEI in 2009, Dr. Schron spent more than 27 years at the NIH's National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Her leadership in multi-site clinical trials was critical to completing studies and reporting outcomes used to establish cardiovascular practice guidelines, improve treatment for heart disease, and save lives. She earned an international reputation as a clinical trialist by pioneering methods to assess patients' quality of life, highlighting and expanding the significance of Data Safety Monitoring Boards, and studying methods for patient recruitment, enrollment, and compliance with treatment regimens in clinical trials. Dr. Schron also served as senior nurse director in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps where she received numerous awards for her distinguished career in the Department of Health and Human Services, achieving the rank of captain. She is a fellow of the American Association of Nursing, the American Heart Association, and the Society for Clinical Trials.

Publications

Dr. Schron is the author of peer-reviewed articles on clinical cardiology in journals including the Journal of Hypertension, American Heart Journal, Circulation, and New England Journal of Medicine, and in publications such as the Oxford Textbook of Public Health, Oxford Textbook of Clinical Research Ethics, and Handbook of Health Behavior Change, among others.


The National Eye Institute (NEI), part of the National Institutes of Health, leads the federal government's research on the visual system and eye diseases. NEI supports basic and clinical science programs that result in the development of sight-saving treatments.
