Current Activities

Dr. Coleman is involved in several national eye health outreach programs including work with the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) developing patient-centered guidelines, performing comparative effectiveness research, and serving as the director of the Hoskins Center for Quality Eye Care.

Research Highlights

Her research focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and societal impact of glaucoma, cataract, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Clinical projects include the prevention of visual impairment and blindness among school-aged children, investigating genetic variations in AMD, and the treatment of glaucoma.

Professional Highlights

Dr. Coleman is currently a member for the Food and Drug Administration Ophthalmic Devices panel and a Board of Trustees member for Helen Keller International. Since 2003, she has served as executive editor of glaucoma for the American Journal of Ophthalmology. She has also served on several AAO committees including the Glaucoma Panel for the Knowledge Base, the Interspecialty Education Committee, the Health Policy Committee, EyeCare America Glaucoma Committee, and the Task Force on Aging. She has also served as president of the Los Angeles Society of Ophthalmology, chair of the Nominating Committee for the American Glaucoma Society, and president of Women in Ophthalmology.

The National Eye Institute (NEI), part of the National Institutes of Health, leads the federal government's research on the visual system and eye diseases. NEI supports basic and clinical science programs that result in the development of sight-saving treatments.
